Porto or Lisbon? Porto is more compact, authentic and affordable; Lisbon is bigger, livelier and more varied. For a short, local city break, we’d point you to Porto; for more diversity and nightlife, choose Lisbon. And honestly? The best choice is to do both!

The rooftops of Porto seen from above

It’s the big debate of any trip to Portugal: Porto or Lisbon? We won’t lie, we have a soft spot for Porto. But each city has its charms, so here’s what you need to make up your mind (or not!).

The atmosphere

Porto charms with its intimate feel, hilly lanes and well-preserved atmosphere: you quickly feel at home. Lisbon, the luminous capital, is bigger, more cosmopolitan and more buzzing. Two very different characters.

The budget

Point to Porto: the city is generally a little cheaper than Lisbon, whether for sleeping, eating or going out. That said, both remain among Europe’s most affordable capitals. Plenty of room to treat yourself.

What to see in each

In Porto: the Ribeira, the port cellars and the Douro Valley. In Lisbon: Alfama, Belém, tram 28 and day trips to Sintra. Porto is best savoured over 2-3 days; Lisbon offers more variety over a slightly longer stay.

How long to plan?

Count 2 to 3 days for Porto, 3 to 4 days for Lisbon. For a first trip to Portugal, many choose… to combine the two, linked by just a 3-hour train ride.

Our advice: why choose?
