In short

A shared tour is what we suggest when you have three days in Porto and want to see the Douro without renting a car. Our four day trips leave every morning with eight people at most. Small enough that the guide answers your questions, flexible enough to stop when the light deserves it. You get in, someone else drives, someone else tells the story, and you are back in the evening without having hunted for a parking space in Pinhão.

Douro Valley Wine Tour: €152 per person

Nine hours in the oldest demarcated wine region in the world. Up the valley along the river, then an estate visit with a tasting of wine, olive oil, bread and honey. Lunch at the quinta, poured with the estate’s own bottles. In the afternoon, the olive oil museum and its tasting, then Amarante for vinho verde with charcuterie and cheese. Back in Porto by early evening.

Practical: departs 8am, runs 9 hours, free pickup within Porto. Included: guide, air-conditioned van, estate visit, lunch and tastings. Optional: a one-hour rabelo boat cruise in Pinhão.

Porto City Tour: €126 per person

The city by road and by river in the same day. Eighty minutes in the van to cover the landmarks, the climb up the Clérigos Tower if you fancy it, the Sé Cathedral, then Bolhão market and lunch. In the afternoon, ninety minutes under sail on the Douro, still the best vantage point on the six bridges. It ends in a tavern over a sandwich and a drink.

Practical: departs 8.30am, runs 9 hours, free pickup within Porto. Included: guide, transport, the sailing trip, the tavern stop with a sandwich and a drink. Lunch at the market is optional.

Aveiro & Coimbra Tour: €119 per person

Two towns that could hardly be more different, in one day. Coimbra first, the old capital: an hour inside the university grounds, an hour in the historic centre and its steep lanes. Then Aveiro, forty-five minutes down the road, for lunch, the Art Nouveau facades and a seventy-minute moliceiro cruise on the canals. A local pastry is included, and the ovos moles really are worth trying where they are made.

Practical: departs 8am, runs 9 hours, free pickup within Porto. Included: guide, transport, the moliceiro cruise, a local pastry.

Porto Fado Night Tour: €102 per person

The only one of our trips that starts when the others finish. Eighty minutes of panoramic driving while the sun goes down over the waterfront and the bridges light up, then dinner in a room where fado is sung live. Two and a half hours at the table, drinks included. The van drops you back at your accommodation, which saves negotiating a taxi at midnight.

Practical: departs 7pm, runs 4 hours, pickup within Porto. Included: guide, panoramic tour, dinner with drinks, the fado performance, return transport and drop-off.

Frequently asked questions about our shared tours

How many people are in the group?

Eight at most, on all four trips. That is the capacity of the van, and it is what lets the guide talk to everyone without a microphone.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes, free of charge within Porto. The official meeting point is Rua de Cândido dos Reis, but we will collect you if your accommodation is in the city. Give us the address when you book.

Are meals included in the price?

It depends on the trip. Lunch at the quinta is included on the Douro day, dinner is included on the fado evening. On the Porto day, lunch at the market is optional, and on Aveiro and Coimbra it is at your own expense.

What happens if it rains?

The tours still run. Transport is in an air-conditioned van and most of the programme is under cover. Only the rabelo cruise in Pinhão can be called off by the skipper, in which case the option is not charged.

How late can I book?

As long as seats are left on your date, booking stays open. In July and August the Douro departures often fill up a week ahead.

How is this different from a private tour?

On a shared tour you share the van and the timings with other travellers, and you pay per person. On a private tour the vehicle and the guide are yours, the route can change as you go, and the rate covers the whole group. For two people a shared tour costs considerably less. From four or five people up, the gap narrows.

Is there a child rate?

Write to us before booking with the children’s ages. Depending on the trip we either apply a reduced rate or point you towards something better suited to a younger pace.
