Porto is even more beautiful in the rain! We’re exaggerating slightly, but this city wouldn’t be the Portuguese capital of saudade (nostalgia) if it weren’t misty, damp and wild. The rain is part of its charm. That said, we agree it isn’t always the best weather to explore a city when it chora (cries, as the Portuguese say). So here are our 3 favourite spots to take shelter when it rains in Porto.

1 – Visit the Palácio da Bolsa

One of the most impressive architectural works in the city is also the perfect place to escape the rain and admire a remarkable setting. The palace’s history is just as fascinating: for 180 years this neoclassical building has stood as a symbol of Porto’s prestige.

2 – Enjoy a glass of Port with a view

Rather than the touristy cellars, we take you to a local spot with an extraordinary view and breathtaking Port wines — the very opposite of the tourist traps. Contact us to find out more: contact@voyage-a-porto.com.

3 – Sip a hot coffee in a secret address

From the outside, you’d never guess a café hides inside this eclectic shop selling souvenirs, clothes and books. At the back on the right, a room with raw walls has been turned into a café for locals and travellers wanting a break in their day. The place is famous for its delicious cakes — we even tasted Port-infused tea there, a treat! And surprise: a small sheltered patio at the back lets you enjoy your drink in the warm, even under the rain.
