It may seem like a simple question, but the answer can save you precious time.
Porto is a humid city, set on the banks of the Douro river, almost at the mouth of the Atlantic. The weather can be glorious, but it rains a good part of the year. Even in summer, some days can be overcast or rainy.
Porto is also occasionally wrapped in a mist — beautiful and very cinematic, but one that veils the city in high humidity. In summer it can appear in the morning and lift by late morning, once the sun really starts warming the stone of the buildings.
The city is windy on many days of the year, so a scarf to avoid catching a cold is essential.
How you dress to explore a city depends not only on the weather, but also on the nature of the place itself: modern, old, hilly, flat, well-kept public spaces or neglected ones. Porto is a majestic, very old and extremely hilly city. Built on a hillside, you climb almost immediately from the Ribeira. It is mostly covered in cobblestones, more or less well preserved — so comfortable clothing and trainers are a must-have!
When in Porto, you are very likely to walk along the seafront, take a boat trip and go for a swim. The proximity of the sea draws travellers to long ocean-side walks, boat escapes on the Douro and a refreshing dip between sunbathing sessions on the beaches.
In summer, it is easy to forget to protect yourself when a few clouds appear — the great danger of sunburn. So do not forget your sun protection, sunglasses and hat.
Finally, pack the clothes you feel good and look good in: the city is highly photogenic and you will not resist keeping a memory of yourself in front of sublime landscapes and views.
